In 2009, BIBA launched International Business Week to foster an increased appreciation among Barbadians for the international business sector and its contribution to the Barbados economy. In 2020, we rebranded to Global Business Week to continue focusing national attention on the nature, importance and contribution of the global business sector.
This year, Global Business Week will continue to explore opportunities in trade to and from Barbados, capture new employment and business opportunities, and further exploration of thought leadership covering a multiplicity of engaging topics under the pivotal and strategic theme – Resilience: Adapting, Transforming, Thriving.
The Public Discussion Forum is Global Business Week’s open conversation with the wider community, a hybrid event, in person and livestreamed via YouTube and Facebook Live, that brings the global business sector and the public together around a subject shaping the sector’s future. This year’s Forum takes on Smarter, Faster, Gone? The Human Side of the AI Revolution, examining what artificial intelligence means not only for systems and industries, but for the people within them.
Staged for the first time this year at the Barbados Community College, this showcase attracts hundreds of tertiary-level students and mid-career professionals looking for expert guidance from representatives across the international business sector on what should be the next steps along their professional paths and how to position themselves to take advantage of all this sector has to offer. This event also offers a key opportunity for recruiters to meet potential new hires while showcasing their organisations.
As Barbados continues to seek further diversification in its source markets for global business, the flagship event for our week of activities is always our Global Business Conference. Invited speakers will be local, regional and international business leaders with strategic knowledge and experience operating in global markets. As usual, this year’s conference will be a must-attend event for anyone interested in expanding into the sector and gaining first-hand insight into how it functions. Over 250 participants are expected for this conference.
Global Business Week engages Barbados’ next generation through a dedicated symposium for secondary school students. The session introduces young people to the global business sector, the industries it spans, the careers it offers, and the role it plays in the island’s economy, as part of GBW’s ongoing commitment to education and awareness.
